10+2 - Importer Security Filing

Jane L. Taeger
Director of Compliance
Samuel Shapiro & Company, Inc.

On January 3, 2008, U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued the long-awaited Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Importer Security Filing and Additional Carrier Requirements. Additional information, commonly referred to as "10+2" for 10 data elements to be supplied by the importer plus 2 data elements to be provided by the carrier, is to be provided for cargo destined for the United States prior to loading on vessels at foreign ports. The presentation will detail this new security initiative and the challenges it presents to the importer.
